  • Hair dye (semi-permanent or permanent)
  • Developer (usually 20 volume)
  • Mixing bowl & brush
  • Gloves
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Wig stand or mannequin head
  • Aluminum foil or plastic wrap
  • Sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner

Step-by-Step: How to Dye a Human Hair Wig

1. Prep the Wig

  • Detangle gently using a wide-tooth comb.

  • Wash the wig with a sulfate-free shampoo to remove product buildup.

  • Allow it to dry 80–90% before dyeing.

2.  Mix the Hair Dye

  • Follow the hair dye manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Mix dye and developer in a 1:1 ratio unless otherwise noted.

3. Apply the Dye

  • Secure the wig on a wig stand.

  • Part the wig into small sections.

  • Use a brush to apply dye from roots to ends.

  • Massage gently to ensure even coverage.

4. Let It Process

  • Cover with plastic wrap or foil.

  • Let it sit for 30–40 minutes (or per the dye’s instructions).

5. Rinse & Condition

  • Rinse with cool to lukewarm water until it runs clear.

  • Apply deep conditioner and let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
